typographyyyy!!!!!!!!!

During last weeks lesson we experimented with the idea of creating three dimensional typography, this involved us creating installations of various letters and symbols. We were given 2 match boxes, masking tape and 20 minutes to create a letter or symbol of some sort within our chosen spaces. We wanted to integrate our shape into the building so that part of the shape was embedded into it. The task was a lot more challenging than i had anticipated and coming up with 3D shapes involved a lot of thought. At first i attempted to make my piece free standing however i then realised that this would involve copious amounts of making tape and patience. Considering the fact that we only had 20 minutes to produce this, i started looking towards the building for inspiration. Different spaces had varying dents, cracks and holes, so i chose to use the join between two pieces of wood to place my matchsticks to form my shape which was a ‘t’. ( Reasoning behind the ‘t’ is due to the fact that it’s the first letter of my name, how imaginative!)
The building formed the backbone of the’t’, while the matchsticks and masking tape created the rest which meant that it had to be viewed from different angles, this i think made it incredibly interesting. Other people used the space by making use of the ripping paper and hanging objects from them. After this exercise we were put into groups and asked to think of a five letter word to make out o cardboard which reflected how we felt about the building. The word we used was decay so we each made one letter. We wanted the letters to look old and decaying hence our flimsy and rough looking use of the cardboard. We had to take the positioning into consideration as it would affect how it would be viewed and interpreted. At first we wanted it to be in a dark corner all slumped over one another but then saw a perfect shelf space up high which slightly contradicted its meaning.
Overall it was very hard to produce decent pieces due to the lack of time however it tested our ability to work quickly and our creativity.
